Boston’s vibrant indie rock band Jean Paul Jean Paul, named after a quirky Seinfeld character, has released one of the most upbeat and dynamic records of the year with their sophomore album, It Comes Back.
Building off the momentum of their 2022 debut, Pollyanna, which featured the Boston Emissions’ Song of the Year “Bruiser,” this new 11-track project showcases the band’s range of styles and sounds, woven together like chapters in a compelling musical story.
At the core of It Comes Back is the theme of desire, with the band exploring love, heartbreak, self-reflection, pain, and joy. The album covers a spectrum of guitar-driven genres—ranging from jangle-pop and alt-rock to folk, reggae, and grunge—creating a whirlwind 30-minute ride that Jean Paul Jean Paul calls a blend of “guitarmonies.”
“One of our main goals for this album was to capture the raw energy we feel on stage,” says bassist Christopher Cornell. “We didn’t want to make a live album, but we wanted to channel that same energy with polished production.”
The album was produced, engineered, and mixed by Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studios in Allston, the band’s home base. It kicks off with the explosive single “Jai alai,” written by vocalist and guitarist Steve Harding during a beach trip to Fort Lauderdale during the Covid lockdown. The song tells the story of someone regaining their spark after losing it—tying into the album’s central theme of resilience and bouncing back.
With It Comes Back freshly released, Jean Paul Jean Paul is already looking toward the future. The band is eager to experiment with new genres and continue pushing their sound. Drummer Andy Gelb shares, “We had a blast writing this record, but we’re already working on the next one. We’ve got new ideas and can’t wait to bring fresh riffs into our live shows.”
As the band’s chemistry continues to thrive both in the studio and on stage, It Comes Back marks a bold and exciting step forward for Jean Paul Jean Paul, solidifying their place in the indie rock scene.
