Singer-Songwriter Cate Tomlinson Returns with Haunting New Single “Twenty One”

Nostalgic Ballad Reflects on the Trials of Young Love and Self-Compromise

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 11, 2023) – Rising indie pop artist Cate Tomlinson has released her new single “twenty one,” an intimate coming-of-age tale that mourns the loss of one’s self in a relationship.

The melancholic piano ballad marks a stylistic shift from Tomlinson’s previous gritty pop-rock releases, showcasing her versatility as a songwriter.

Written as she approaches her 22nd birthday, “twenty one” sees Tomlinson reflecting on a complicated teenage romance with newfound maturity and perspective.

“I feel like I’ve been trying to write this song since I was 16, and it finally happened in the way I wanted it to this year,” she explains.

“I didn’t have enough perspective before. It took me a full five years to gather all the information and reflection I needed to explain this relationship to myself.”

With its hazy production and Tomlinson’s evocative storytelling, “twenty one” will resonate with fans of artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, and Fletcher.

It’s an intimate track that many young listeners will relate to, as Tomlinson unravels the morality and trials of young love.

For the rising SoCal native, it also represents closing the door on a formative chapter. “This song makes me feel pretty vulnerable, but I’m proud of it,” she says. “I think it will help other people see themselves in it.”

At only 21, Cate Tomlinson has already made waves with her sharp songwriting and dynamic vocals. Previously based in Palo Alto, she’s now building her music career in Boston while studying at Northeastern University. Look out for more new music from Tomlinson soon.

“twenty one” is now available on all streaming platforms via AWAL. Keep up with Cate Tomlinson’s upcoming shows and releases on Instagram and Twitter @catetomlinson and www.catetomlinson.com.
