“Few musicians have the distinction of being part of not one, but two iconic bands, and Peter Hook has achieved just that. With Peter Hook & The Light, he’s paying tribute to the legacies of both his former groups.”

“The fanbases of Joy Division and New Order are distinct, but this tour, which showcases Substance from both bands, is blending those lines. It’s fascinating to see Joy Division fans exposed to New Order, and vice versa.

When we play both, the audience stays put—no one’s heading to the bar when their preferred band isn’t on. We’ve inadvertently created a deeper appreciation for both groups.”

Peter Hook & The Light are set to continue their extensive global tour into 2024 with a full North American leg kicking off in late August and running through September. These headlining shows will feature full performances of the Substance albums by both Joy Division and New Order.

While tickets for shows in Toronto, Washington D.C., Boston, and Vancouver are sold out, tickets for other dates (listed below) are still available at: https://peterhookandthelight.live.

Peter Hook first revisited the iconic Joy Division album Unknown Pleasures in May 2010 during a charity concert, and has since consistently honored the discographies of both Joy Division and New Order by performing their albums in full each year.

This journey has now culminated in the performance of the Substance compilations from Factory Records, celebrating over four decades of Joy Division’s lasting influence, particularly through the Joy Division: A Celebration concerts, where both of the band’s studio albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer, were played in their entirety.

“It never ceases to amaze me how much joy it brings to play the Substance LPs,” says Peter Hook. “The contrast between Joy Division and New Order is stark, yet they complement each other beautifully.

My only regret is not being able to perform more of our tracks each night. I’m really looking forward to what’s next. So, let’s dive into some Substance and get ready for the future. Lots of love, Hooky.”

Peter Hook’s dedication to revisiting his musical past has taken him through the albums Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Still, Movement, Power, Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood, Technique, and Republic, leading up to this point.

With over 800 concerts under their belt, Peter Hook & The Light have shared their sound with audiences around the globe.

Key performances throughout this period include appearances at festivals like Benicassim, Primavera Sound, Kendal Calling, Victorious, Bestival, and Rebellion, along with extensive tours in North and South America, Europe, China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, all met with widespread acclaim from both fans and critics.

The Substance compilation albums were released by Factory Records in 1987 and 1988. New Order’s compilation came first, featuring all their singles up to that point, including “Blue Monday,” “Bizarre Love Triangle,” “Temptation,” “Shellshock,” and “True Faith.” Curated by Factory Records’ Tony Wilson, it was the label’s 200th release and remains New Order’s best-selling album.

The following year, Joy Division’s Substance was released, featuring singles not included on their two studio albums, such as “Transmission,” “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” and “Atmosphere,” along with tracks from their An Ideal For Living EP and the Factory Records sampler.

The album, beginning with “Warsaw,” captures the band’s evolution, culminating in tracks like “Digital” and “Dead Souls,” and was the 250th release from Factory Records.
