The video showcased Iron Horse’s dynamic bluegrass adaptation of the Kansas classic, allowing fans to experience the music in a new light.
The Pickin’ On Series had a history of transforming FM radio rock hits into bluegrass gems, with Iron Horse contributing standout covers of tracks like Journey’s “Open Arms,” alongside other artists like Cornbread Red, who took on Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” and Styx’s “Come Sail Away.”
American Songwriter praised the adaptation, with Savannah Dantona stating, “When you first heard Iron Horse’s cover of ‘Carry On Wayward Son,’ it felt like an uncommonly catchy bluegrass tune.
Then, as the banjo and backing guitar kicked in, you realized it was Kansas, reimagined with a bluegrass twist.”
Vance Henry of Iron Horse reminisced about the song’s original release, saying, “I first heard this track as a teenager in the mid-70s, and it was clear it was going to be a hit.
Even after all these years, it hasn’t grown old. Recording it in our bluegrass style was a joy.”
The Pickin’ On Series, which began in 1993 with Pickin’ On the Movies, had since evolved into a beloved tradition at CMH Records, with over 300 albums released.
By blending bluegrass with popular music, the series garnered attention from media outlets like Rolling Stone and Uproxx and charted on Billboard’s Top Bluegrass Albums chart.
The series also received retrospective praise from Los Angeles Times and No Depression, cementing its status as a hallmark in bluegrass music.
